Antigovernment protests, publicised through social media, began across Egypt on January 25, with Tahrir Square in Cairo at the heart of the movement. President Hosni Mubarak ordered troops and tanks to quell the demonstrations, and clashes broke out between the protesters and Mubarak supporters. By February 1, more than 1 million people had joined the protests nationwide. Mubarak stepped down on February 11 and a military council was formed to run the country's affairs. On August 3, a frail Mubarak was wheeled into court on a hospital bed to face corruption charges.
